Painting portraits
Last month, Matthew collaborated with much admired friend and Insta-ally Cassandra Ellis on a piece for her Atelier Ellis website.
While Atelier Ellis may have a growing reputation for a sublime palette of paint colours with extraordinarily pleasing finishes, we’re sure that soon they will be famous for the utterly compelling and very human ‘Portrait’ section of their website. Showcasing the ‘homes’ (not ‘houses’!) of a handful of creatives, Cassandra studies what it is that makes a place ‘home’ through beautifully crafted words and images.
Having always admired the ‘quiet’ aesthetic of Atelier Ellis, Matthew was excited to take part, and also eager to put a bold stamp on his new house, using Cassandra’s earthy paint colours.
Many swatches, sample pots, consultations and a couple of about-turns later, Matthew settled on the favourites – Clay Slip, Stony Plaster, Aged Black, Faded Blossom, Tea Rose and Bitter Chocolate. Thanks to a brilliant band of painters and hustlers, we managed to squeak over the finish line to welcome Cassandra and master of natural light, photographer Kalina Krawczyk into our serene new world. It was a wonderful excuse to finally empty the boxes and cart three decades’ worth of World of Interiors to the new reading room – and as you’ll see from the resulting photographs, we’re absolutely enamoured.
