Matthew founded the company with Camilla in 2017. Having established himself as an antique furniture dealer, he used his understanding of what makes objects endure to distil his knowledge into a collection of made-to-measure furniture and lighting. He designs everything the workshop makes, often drawing on antique references not to copy, but to learn what gives pieces longevity.

Matthew leads the creative direction of the company and is involved throughout the process from initial sketches to final photographs. Matthew can often be found roaming in nature with Oggy or dancing to 90s house music.

Camilla came to Matthew Cox from advertising, where she worked across account management and, latterly, the creative department. She brings optimism, ideas and an instinct for imagining how things could be better, alongside an interest in communication, relationships and storytelling.

She is the driving force behind our 100-year plan and has a habit of caring too much and encouraging people to go further than they thought they could. Camilla enjoys poetry/spoken word and often wonders if it's too late to become an acrobat.

Greg joined as our lead maker and built the workshop from the ground up, establishing the standards of quality the company is now known for. He understands Matthew's sensibility instinctively and has created a workshop culture rooted in learning, teaching and care.

As comfortable behind a camera as he is on the tools, Greg has a remarkable eye for detail and a curiosity that leads him to constantly explore new disciplines. The high bar he has set is one of the reasons we know our pieces will still be here long after all of us, and why he can also be incredibly annoying at times.

Steve has one of the most varied roles in the company, making sure everyone knows what they're doing and everything is where it should be. He moves at considerable speed, is brilliant at making things happen, and brings an energy to the workshop that is hard to put into words.

Alongside his coordination role, Steve is one of our more experienced furniture makers, having started with us several years ago as an apprentice. He also has a gift for making any room feel like somewhere you want to be, and does the best and most alarming animal impressions of anyone in the team.

Peter came to us straight from Rycotewood, one of the country's finest furniture colleges, introduced to us by the inimitable Dr Lynn Jones. He joined as a furniture maker and finisher, but soon found his calling in our metal patination lab, where he has become a tireless innovator and one of the most generous and enthusiastic teachers in the workshop.

It may also be argued that nowhere is Peter more impressive than at the water park.

A graduate of Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art, Holly came to us from an architecture practice, ready to get her hands on the work. She took the helm of the finishing department and has not walked but skipped with it, absorbing Matthew's expertise and building it into a team culture of curiosity, generosity and constant evolution.

Holly and her team share their knowledge freely, with clients, press and work experience alike, usually shattering expectations and helping people fall in love with natural materials and the way they change over time. Holly has a wonderfully distinctive laugh that travels across rooms and possibly counties.

Sarah is the heart and soul of the team. Her unusual first love is deliveries, and she stuns clients and colleagues with the level of care she gives to each one. Sarah makes sure everything is carefully wrapped, packed or crated. She provides status updates to clients and spoils the team with her famous itineraries and van snacks.

She's also the first port of call for aftercare questions, first-aid, both physical and mental, and runs the photography schedule with a well-judged combination of stick and carrot. As a former assistant to legends of the photography world, including Rankin, she ensures every client receives beautiful photographs of their pieces before they arrive. She is also, it should be said, very much in charge of everyone having a brilliant birthday.

Katy studied product and furniture design at Birmingham City University and joined us as a junior finisher. Since then, she has been developing her skills as a furniture maker. She has a love of real quality and believes that it's something that should be taught at school.

Beyond the workshop, Katy is an insightful speaker on diversity and inclusion, drawing on her own experiences and those of the team. She has given talks at the Inspiring Makers Conference and at events as part of the Sylva Gender Project. She has a rare gift for making important conversations both brutally honest and brilliantly entertaining, whether she's in the lunch room or on a stage.

Jasper finds inspiration everywhere, and a conversation with him is an education in process. He has a gift for making the seemingly mundane a true art form, moves between making and finishing with ease, and is always at his best as part of a project team.

Outside the workshop, he is a talented illustrator and surfer who makes beautifully decorative surfboards, sometimes finished with hand-pressed wildflowers. A talented man with a gentle soul.

Evan came to us highly recommended from Moulton College, where he studied furniture making, and worked with us while still studying. He got so thoroughly stuck in that we thought we should hang onto him, and we're glad we did.

He takes his work seriously, loves passing on what he has learned, and has developed an unusual enthusiasm for health and safety that has earned him the affectionate moniker EP PPE. This sits in interesting contrast to his most passionate pursuit outside the workshop: skateboarding, and his parallel life as a DJ.

Evan is soon to leave us for European adventures in skateparks and DJ booths. Bon voyage, Evan.

Steph is serious about her furniture-making, especially about her timber. She has an fantastic knowledge of how grain behaves and how to judge the right boards for a particular project, and is always learning, always questioning, always thinking about how things could be improved.

That instinct has found an outlet beyond her own bench too. Steph initiated the Wednesday after-school club for personal projects, and has since set up a calendar of toolbox talks and team events that has become a real part of workshop life. She recently overcame a dislike of public speaking by talking about her work at Bath Spa University. There's a lot of competition but Steph arguably has the most impressive dance moves of anyone in the team.

Ben first came to us during his university holidays, and we could see early on that his talents extended well beyond his studies. He went on to graduate with a degree in music and is an insanely brilliant jazz guitarist. When the opportunity arose, we offered him a place in the workshop, and he has gone from assisting others to having his own responsibilities, learning fast at every stage.

Whether perfecting his use of a router, mastering melodic minor scales or pushing his limits on the climbing wall, Ben is always in pursuit of excellence. He is, incidentally, Greg's younger brother, and really, really hates mushrooms.

Georgia was one to watch from the moment she tracked down every last detail about our apprenticeship open day with impressive tenacity. That dogged curiosity never left her. She always wants to understand why, learns fast, and absolutely smashed her apprenticeship at Rycotewood, earning a distinction and impressing her tutors along the way.

In 2025 she exhibited a hand-built konami cabinet at the New Makers exhibition. She is currently taking a short sabbatical, entertaining us from afar on social media, and will no doubt be keen to reclaim her bench when she returns.

Fliss came to us after a career in fashion, but felt the pull of something more hands-on. She was awarded the Arkwright Engineering Scholarship at school, and that early passion for design and making never really left her.

During lockdown, she built a communal vegetable garden and a pizza oven, both from reclaimed materials. As well as being a furniture maker, Fliss helps keep supplies replenished and brings a warm, buzzy energy to the workshop. Fliss practises yoga, walks her Bosnian rescue dog, Dora and hops on a surfboard at every opportunity.

Mark arrived at Matthew Cox as a retired RAF Wing Commander with a background in engineering, an MBA from Cranfield and a furniture-making qualification from Waters and Acland.

He formalised our performance management system, introduced rally board meetings across the studio and workshop, and overhauled our scheduling and pricing. Continuous improvement, particularly around efficiency, is very much his own. The whole team benefits from his highly rational mind, which he has a gift for sharing in just the right measure.

Outside the company, Mark thinks nothing of running ultramarathons like the Spine, a 268-mile expedition race completed on approximately four hours' sleep. He is recognisable in the workshop by his Montane mountainwear and an ever-present cup of tea.

We were absolutely not looking for a finisher at the time, let alone a third Georgia, but Gee, as she is known to us, was just too good to let go. She came in for a trial, and that was that.

With a degree in Fine Art from Norwich University and a background in illustration, Gee brings a rare combination of artistic sensibility and commercial instinct to the finishing department. She is experienced in hand-painted finishes and all kinds of surface finishes, and runs her own prop-making business on the side. Gee also does a quite extraordinary Avril Lavigne impression.

Stephen, Stevo to us, brings a wealth of experience to his role, having spent decades running his own professional photographic laboratory and working with clients including the BBC and the National Portrait Gallery before moving into delivery and logistics. He is efficient, reliable and mostly unflappable, which makes him a natural fit for getting our pieces where they need to be, safely and on time.

He is also the author of the team tennis reports, which are wicked, eccentrically punctuated, but also very funny.

Charlie and Greg studied furniture-making at university together, and it is clear that the two were always destined to work side by side. Charlie is a hugely talented furniture maker with a genuine fascination for his craft. He is a dedicated and generous teacher, and someone who drives himself hard in pursuit of quality.

He is responsible for the technical drawings that underpin everything we make, no mean feat given that every piece is made to measure or bespoke. Charlie always has the most envied lunch and is a keen nude gardener (at home).

Rachel came to us with a first-class degree in Product Design from Nottingham Trent University. She completed the King's Foundation's Highgrove CREATE programme on rethinking wood for furniture and has a genuine feel for craft, material provenance, and fine detail. Rachel has a well-rounded understanding of furniture from both designer and maker perspectives, which makes her an excellent fit for our studio.

Rachel keeps things running with control and colour-coding, and entertains her colleagues with her under-the-breath one-liners.

Louis came to us via an art and design background and the Furniture Craft School in Kent. He is a relentless learner with a love of hand tools and an appetite for knowledge that has led colleagues to describe him as something of a supercomputer. He loves talking about the details of his work, which makes him very good company at the bench.

Outside the workshop, Louis is a bit of a wheeler-dealer with a taste for interesting cars, turning up in anything from a 4x4 to a Ford Capri. He also brings excellent 1970s sartorial energy to the tennis court.

Lily came to us with one of the most varied and remarkable histories in the team. She has worked as a gallery assistant, seamstress, picture framer, bookshop assistant specialising in rare and antiquarian books, copywriter and life model. Along the way, she developed a deep appreciation for handmade objects, design history and the processes behind them.

She also creates found-poetry collages and has the most beautiful whippet pup called Sabbath.

Lucy arrived at Matthew Cox with one of the more unexpected career histories in the team: forensic DNA analyst, science technician, web content administrator and, for ten years, the owner of her own handmade jewellery business. That combination of scientific rigour and her experience making things by hand with care and attention make her the perfect person to look after enquiries for lighting and material samples.

She brings a rational mind and an artistic sensibility in equal measure, along with a meticulous attention to detail and a knack for getting things done.

Enna joined us with a distinction from Rycotewood's Foundation Degree in Furniture Design and Make, and years of hands-on experience in cabinetmaking, joinery, and wood machining. It was a job restoring antiques in Somerset that first ignited her love of woodwork, and that thread runs through everything she has done since.

She loves a hand tool, speaks eloquently about birds, and we know she will fit in here very well.

Alex has just joined us with a 2:1 in 3D Design and Craft from the University of Brighton and a wealth of experience in high-end design studios. He has been shortlisted for the Young Furniture Makers award and the Conran Shop Design Award, and we are delighted to have him in the workshop.

We look forward to finding out more about Alex's approach to furniture making. And now we've heard he can make bao buns, we're looking forward to those too.

Neil joined Matthew Cox as a retired finance director, bringing a wealth of experience and a very serious commitment to good bookkeeping and cash flow management. He arrived just in time to help steer the company through the pandemic and out the other side. For which we will be forever grateful.

He works around a competitive interest in golf and bowls, is a steady and reassuring presence in the company, and is, by all accounts, brilliant fun at parties.

Mike has been with Matthew on and off since before anyone can remember. As an artist, former artist-in-residence at Uppingham School and travelling musician, he brings a wealth of stories, abundant talent and a case of wanderlust, currently in remission.

Fascinated and appalled in equal measure by the meticulous approach of our younger team, Mike is learning quite a few new tricks while passing on decades of furniture-restoration skills and a deep understanding of paint and pigments. His specialist subjects, which admittedly have limited commercial application in the workshop, are perspective in art and the life and works of Peter Cook and Dudley Moore.

Oggy's arrival caused an initial dip in revenue as Matthew was required to adjust to a new working structure. This proved temporary. Oggy's love of routine soon instilled a welcome sense of discipline in the Creative Director, and the company has not looked back.

A passionate advocate for nature, Oggy enjoys the mature parkland of places like Burghley's Capability Brown-designed grounds as well as the more biodiverse woodland of Old Sulehay. He is also an instinctive therapy dog, known to settle on laps during one-to-ones without invitation. As Oggy is a volunteer, and a very cute if occasionally vocal miniature schnauzer, this behaviour is deemed acceptable.
